Cocaine, Heroin, Cannabis, Alcohol and gambling are usually the addictions that immediately come to mind for most people, but  in addition to the more common substances and behaviours associated with addiction some people experience an addiction that they either feel too embarrassed to admit to or they question whether it is even actually an addiction at all.

If your question is can I be addicted for example to a sexual behaviour, love, work, food, Internet, shopping, video gaming? The answer is 'yes' potentially you can. So whether you are sure you have an addiction problem or you just suspect you might, I can help you understand whether or not you are dealing with an addiction, the extent of your addiction, options available to you and of course offer a treatment programme including psychotherapy to help you deal with your problem.

As an addiction counsellor with more than 30 years experience this is what I will do if you contact me with an addiction problem:

  1. Arrange a one to one assessment to help you understand the nature and extent of your problem and where to go from there.
  2. Establish whether or not medical intervention is required e.g. alcohol detox and if so help you identify where and with whom you can locate the help you need.
  3. Discuss with you what type of therapy you would find most useful. If you are unsure we will explore your options and I can advise you.
  4. Describe my  treatment approach and explain how it works.

What I will not do…

  1. Ignore any medical or psychiatric (in extreme cases) help that you need relating to your addiction. My priority is always your safety and wellbeing.
  2. Assume that only my approach is suitable for your individual needs. Different people prefer or respond better to different approaches.
  3. Offer you the treatment without making you aware of alternative options available to you.
